This breaks my heart.

, originally uploaded by Buzz McKinnon.

Oh Mr. Bones! May you rest in peace. We always loved you like one of our own.

Here's one of my favorite pictures of Mr. Bones.

mr. bones

No more sad news, please.

If only I could sleep as serenely as the cats.

Just lay down in the morning sun and go to sleep.

But alas, it is not so. And in fact, I had another bad night. A night of not being able to fall asleep at all which actually stresses me out more than the waking up during the night. Because then I think it is going to happen every night and I end up totally psyching myself out. I have no idea why I couldn't sleep last night. I was totally exhausted from the previous night, for one. I followed my usual bedtime routine, started falling asleep while reading, turned out the light...and then no sleep.

It's frustrating.

Perhaps I am just stressed about the week ahead and the fact that I will be alone at work so there is no opportunity for relief if I start losing my mind. Or something like that.

Oh well, all I can do is keep going.

And now I have to run. Literally.

Monday, June 9

I couldn't sleep last night.

Well, I fell asleep in no time at all, but then I woke up at 2:50 and could not fall back asleep. Too many things started going through my head. Bad news from one of my favorite people ever that still has me reeling. I just couldn't stop thinking about him. And then my twitchy husband started twitching quite a bit. I felt like I was in the middle of an earthquake. Well, not really, but it does shake the whole bed and since I already couldn't fall asleep, it was driving me nuts. Next time we have a wad of cash, we're going to invest in one of those beds that does not move.

So I've been tired and rather short-tempered today. Fortunately I've been by myself for the most part so no one has really had to put up with my mood. I've done a little of this and a little of that and actually accomplished a fews things. I still have too many piles though. Things to mail. Craft projects to finish. Polaroids to pin up. Polaroids to put into my album. Clothing that needs to be ironed.

All-in-all I have been feeling better. I don't sleep through the night, but since following some of the suggestions of my D.O.M., I seem to have more energy during the day. The two main things she asked me to do: eat breakfast and take calcium magnesium at bedtime. And a banana does not count as breakfast. So I have been eating breakfast and taking the calcium at night. Hopefully eventually my system will find a new track and I'll actually sleep through the night. We shall see.

I am sure reading about my lack of sleep is rather boring, but since I have so much trouble with sleep, I think about it a lot.

Back to work tomorrow. I have another full work week so here's hoping for some good rest tonight!

Today work has been like

Chinese water torture.

drip
drip
drip

Or like listening to fingernails scraping a chalkboard.

I kind of feel
like
plucking my eyeballs out.

But no, not really.

I did finish my book
but these slow days
always kind of feel like wasted days.

If you are a Polaroid addict like me, you might want to consider pre-ordering this new book.

Happy Birthday Christine!!

If you were in Santa Fe, I'd pick a peony for you. A picture will have to do.

Insomnia & Polaroid Silent Auction

Two totally unrelated subjects for this post!

The Polaroid Silent Auction is happening at SPACE Gallery in Portland, Maine on June 6th. You can preview the prints here. Lots of awesome work. I am delighted that I was invited to submit a print (although they spelled my name wrong). Pretty neat-o and I wish we could be there!

As for the insomnia...well, it's kind of gotten better the past two weeks in that I have been feeling more rested and less irritable even though I still don't sleep through the night. I don't know what that means really, I guess that I am "managing" my insomnia.

I went to see a Doctor of Oriental Medicine yesterday and it was a very positive experience. I've never actually had a massage before nor acupuncture and both left me feeling very relaxed. Plus we talked a lot and I have some new paths to follow as far as working out the insomnia issue goes. So of course I proceeded to have the worst night I've had in a long time last night. Arrrggghh!

My insomnia is typically not staying asleep as opposed to having trouble falling asleep. But nope, not last night. Could not sleep for the life of me. I just kept getting more and more agitated and I swear I felt like I'd had a dose of speed or something. Finally I got up and took a Valium and even that took forever to relax me. I had a big day at work today and being exhausted sucked. The dark circles under my eyes look fabulous too.

So I don't know, it probably is just a fluke that I couldn't fall asleep rather than being directly related to the D.O.M. experience. I guess there was a part of me that hoped for a miracle...that I would sleep through the night. Alas. The suggestions that were given to me all make sense, but they are all things that will help me over time, not instantaneously.

I am keeping the hope, for sure. And crossing my fingers that I sleep tonight.

P.S. We really need someone to house/cat/garden sit for us in July. For a week. If you are not a complete stranger to me and have some interest in spending a week in Santa Fe, let me know. We can't fly you out here, but once you're here, you'll have a nice house to stay in, two cats to keep you company, satellite television and a wireless internet connection. Oh, and there's all that art stuff here too. And hiking.

(Not that I really think this request will work considering that about five people read this blog! But hey, you never know.)

It's getting better

even though it looks like a piece of rawhide. (And it still stings.) Frightening.

It's getting better.

I am still seriously annoyed at myself for letting this happen. Stupid. An open invitation to skin cancer.

It could have been easily avoided
but no
I was being vain about tan lines. I always end up with a zillion different tan lines from hiking, running, gardening, daily walks...and so I decided to even things up a bit.

*Sigh*

My father has had numerous patches of skin frozen off (or whatever they do) and a couple of skin biopsies so my paranoia about skin cancer is no laughing matter.

When he was young, he was a lifeguard for a couple of summers. No sunscreen. Later in life, he was an avid outdoors man...hiking, back country backpacking, mountain climbing, marathons. No sunscreen. I don't think he started wearing sunscreen until he was in his 50's.

And he's still bad about wearing his hat. I bugged him a bunch about it last summer and he said, "I don't want to look like a dork."

He's 68!

And so stubborn.

My sister and I were recently talking about how when we were young, no one was particularly concerned about skin cancer. I played outdoors all the time and no one ever told me to wear sunscreen. Spent hours at the pool covered in tanning oil, not sunscreen.

I don't think I started wearing sunscreen until my early 30's when I started getting age spots on my face.

Now I am pretty good about always putting sunscreen on my face and upper body. And I even wear my dorky hats when I am going to be out in the sun a lot.

But now I've seared my back. Lesson learned, I suppose.

I don't think I've ever had a burn this bad.

As you can tell, it really freaks me out.

Simon likes to nap in the sunshine.

Sometimes it is the evening sun

sometimes the afternoon sun

and sometimes the morning sun.

He's quite the handsome boy.

This morning he was waiting to come in underneath the car instead of sitting on the porch. (They don't stay out all night, but they do go out at about 4:00 AM.) I let him in and a few minutes later I saw the neighbor cat, Don Oro, strutting down our driveway. He must have been over here reminding my boys who is the boss of the neighborhood!

My sunburn hurts more today than it did yesterday. I had to skip doing my sit ups because it was too painful.

Last night I woke up in the middle of the night
(as usual)
and it felt like my back was stuck to the sheets.
I was worried that my skin was going to peel off.
It didn't
of course
but OUCH.

Sunburns suck.

Friday, May 30

I didn't mean to look mad

when I took this photo.

It was taken shortly after the one I posted yesterday. I was bored
so perhaps this is my look of boredom.

I am mad at myself now though.

Yesterday I worked in the yard for most of the afternoon. I put on sunscreen
but I missed a spot
and so there is a portion of my back that is burnt to a crisp.

Ouch.

It stings and it is definitely not good for my skin.

Next time, no tank tops when Will isn't here to put sunscreen on my back.

Thursday, May 29

I was bored at work yesterday.

So I took some pictures.

I like the way
this one turned out.

The rug I am standing on is called "Cat's Paw" and it's my favorite rug at work.

The little seeds scattered about are elm pods.

They blow in the open doors all day. Yesterday there were piles everywhere. It was so windy, we gave up on sweeping.

They have also taken over my back yard which I think I mentioned before.

Yesterday some of the people who came in said, "oh look how pretty", when they saw all the pods. "They look like rose petals." Um, not really.

People are so goofy sometimes.

The Garden

This past Saturday morning we got up early to start our garden work. We bought more flowers and four pepper plants and spent most of the day gardening. I love it, even though I do moan and groan a lot when I have to pull weeds. (By the way, the elm pods that are every where are now sprouting and it is going to be losing battle for quite some time. No fun.)

It's looking good in our back yard. I still need to fill in the front and side yards. Plan to plant more tomatoes (Will was gifted a cherry tomato plant), eggplant, lettuce and something else that I am forgetting now. More zinnias for the front beds. This year is kind of an experiment as we don't really know how certain things will do or how big they'll get...we've never had so much yard before! I think it's all going to work out splendidly.

Yellow Ranunculous

Yes, I am still loving the ranunculous. And now I know how to spell it correctly too!

It's funny, some of the photos that I really like are the ones that absolutely no one looks at on Flickr. (My photos, I mean.) Go figure.

Granted, flower pictures are one of the biggest clichés, but you know, flowers are pretty. Light is pretty. Light and flowers are pretty. And I love flowers so I take a lot of shots of them.

Hope you are enjoying the long weekend...

What was I going to tell you?

I had a post in my head the other day, but I didn't have time to write it. So now it's all fuzzy. And I am fuzzy too because I have once again hit my mid-week lack of sleep slump. The cycle seems to be, sleep well for a few nights and feel great. Sleep poorly for a few nights and totally bottom out by Friday. Rinse. Wash. Repeat.

So, yeah, fuzzy.

I just spent way too long babbling about shopping at Target because there aren't many shops in Santa Fe that suit me and blah blah blah, all because I wanted to show you the new swimsuit I got at Target the other day. But noooooo, it's not on their website so I can't show you at all. (And so I cut out all the babbling.) It's a one piece with a halter-style top and a little skirt. Super cute. A vast improvement over the bikini top + dad's swimming trunks from the 1960's that are too big on me combo. Let's face it, no one *really* wants to see my white belly.

I'm excited about the find because I've been looking for a decent swimsuit for the past five years, if not longer. Swimsuits and me, we just do not go well together. So to actually find one that looks good on me and cost less than 40 bucks is the best thing ever. Not that I even need a swimsuit all that often, but it's nice to have one when needed. AND we're actually going on TWO vacations this year that will require a swimsuit. That's where the excitement really stems from...VACATION.

I've been itching to take a road trip because I just love driving out west. And I want to take photos. Lots and lots of photos. So we finally decided on a plan. We're going to spend a few days in 29 Palms and do a little exploring at Joshua Tree National Park. Then we're going to head to California and visit my favorite aunt and uncle in San Diego (who I haven't seen in well over a decade). I can't wait!!

Second vacation will be to hang out with Will's family at the beach. A beach. In North Carolina or South Carolina. I don't think that's been decided yet. I don't care. Tell me which beach house to show up at and I'll be there. Swimsuit in tow.

So there you go. That's some of what I was going to tell you. I've been writing this at work and thus had to get up about a million and one times so please excuse any lack of coherency. Keep losing my train of thought.

Here's hoping for a good night's rest! (A "good" night for me is staying asleep past 3:00 AM.)

The Word on Rocky

We finally got all the test results back from the vet. And guess what, NOTHING IS WRONG! Wooohooo! But that's what we thought anyway since Rocky acts like a perfectly healthy and happy cat.

Apparently the vet started to tell Will that we should run a few more tests, but Will said, no, we're done. Because for now, we are. Rocky is not sick, why should we treat him like a sick cat? Crazy, I tell you. We will take him back in a month or two so she can test his glucose levels again and if they are still abnormally low, we'll go from there. I just feel like at this point they are convinced that something is wrong with him and I don't like them approaching my kitty cat's health care with that mentality.

Anyway, we are thrilled that nothing turned up on any of the tests.

The Internet Blues, Perhaps

I've been spending a lot of time on the internet, mostly looking at photos on Flickr and that sort of thing. And oftentimes, instead of feeling more "connected", I end up feeling super disconnected from it all, friends and strangers alike. And that feeling tends to get me down.

I've never been particularly popular or had a lot of friends in real life and my existence on the internet has not been any different. (I've been doing this for EIGHT YEARS folks. Hard to believe, but it's true. I made my first blog post on my pita in March of 2000.) And it's fine, really. Except when it's not fine. And I start wondering why I never seem to fit in anywhere, even when I actually put myself out there. I suppose I'll never understand social networking. Always on the sidelines, that's me.

The thing is, I don't even *like* attention. So what is it that I want?

A little bit of connecting, I guess. Just a little bit.

We recently watched Into The Wild which we really enjoyed and it prompted me to read the book. It's an interesting read and while it doesn't make me want to disappear into the wild, it does make me dream about living in the woods. And being a hermit. Well, not a total hermit. I would take Will and the cats with me.

As much as I enjoy and use technology, sometimes I think life was more simple without all of it.

Ha...as I type away on MY BLOG.

Duck, duck, duck...shark!

(I took *a lot* of pictures of this ranunculous. Such a lovely and long-lasting flower!)

Oh, I am tired today. Two nights out with rich food and too much drink does a gal in. Particularly when those two nights were also nights of poor sleep.

The anniversary dinner was festive and fabulous. We took pictures, but I haven't had a chance to scan them yet. We went to Mauka, a newish restaurant in our hood that we've been wanting to try. It was excellent...nice atmosphere and delicious food. We started out with the Ahi Poke spring rolls served with pineapple chutney and black tobiko. So good. We also shared the organic arugula salad with local roasted beets, local Sweetwoods goat cheese croutons and maple vin. It was to die for. OMG, those goat cheese croutons were the best thing ever. Yum. And for our entrees, Will had the fish special which was a type of Hawaiian fish that I can't even guess how to spell. It was served on a bed with rice noodles and I forget the rest, but he loved it. I had the duck breast with sweet potato pancetta hash and red curry sauce. The sauce was a bit on the spicy side for me, but the duck was amazing. I've had good duck before, but this was so different, not so fatty. And as if all that wasn't enough, we had smoked paprika carrot cake for dessert. It had cream cheese frosting and was served with roasted pineapple. Wow. The wines were quite tasty too. I had chardonnay followed by cabernet sauvignon and both were the perfect kind of dry for me. Definitely nice spot for a special occasion dinner out.

Last night we went out to eat as well because some relatives were in town for the evening. We went to Mariscos "La Playa" which is a favorite of my parents. I planned to eat light, but no, that didn't happen. I thought grilled fish would be a safe choice, light and healthy...only not when it is served totally doused in butter and garlic. Dear Lord. I chose the Mako shark and it was delicious but way too rich. By the time we got home, we were both moaning and holding our bellies. Too much food! So tonight, salad at home. Definitely.

I've had a super busy week and the weekend ahead is going to be busy as well. We're having the family over on Sunday for Mother's Day so tomorrow we plan to get all the prep work done and the extra tables set up outside. We're cooking out so it's nothing fancy, but still, we've never actually had my whole family over at once! It'll be fun. And then Monday is Will's birthday, but since he isn't a birthday person, he doesn't want to celebrate much. I think we going to go see Ironman.

So that's it for now. I'll have my weekly flickr faves up in a bit. Happy weekends to you all and don't forget to call your mom!!

Four Fabulous Years!

For my love...

Happy Anniversary my love! Don't we look so young and fresh faced?!

I don't have a shot from today yet, but here are the year's past, just for kicks.

Yesterday
Third anniversary. We had just moved to Santa Fe a few days before.

I don't see to have one from our second anniversary. We had dinner at Umi in Pittsburgh and I believe I had been sick all day. Probably why there is no photo.

may 7 - our first anniversary
First anniversary. At Ray's Marlin in Pittsburgh. We had just moved there a few weeks before!

on the brooklyn bridge
And my very favorite shot from our wedding day, taken with my Holga by Stephanie, the lovely musician in this video.

Will and I got hitched four years ago at City Hall in Manhattan with six friends in tow. It was a wonderful day. This shot was taken before we headed to City Hall via the C train. After the 30 second ceremony (seriously!), we had a photo shoot while walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. Here are a few more shots that I've posted to Flickr. With everything being all about Polaroid for me lately, it only recently dawned on me that we had Polaroid shots from our wedding that I had never even scanned. So shocking! See, we got married before I joined Flickr...so most of our wedding day is actually not on the internet. Rather, I have a very lovely photo album of the day.

What a lucky woman I am to have such a sweet, loving and talented husband! And one who is totally understanding of my need to compulsively buy Polaroid film. He never complains that all my film is taking over the fridge. Thanks baby!

The traditional anniversary gift for four years is flowers. Rather than buy each other flowers, our gifts to each other will be flowers for our garden out back. Looking forward to all the planting we will do.

Tonight we're going out to dinner and I can't wait! We trying out one of the newer restaurants in our neighborhood. I'll report back on the food later in the week.

Santa Fe on Design*Sponge

Huh. Randomly googling the restaurant Mauka and stumbled across this "Santa Fe Guide" on Design*Sponge - Santa Fe Design Guide. I perused it pretty quickly, but nonetheless interesting that the writer was obviously in the areas that my husband and I work yet neither of our galleries are mentioned even though some of our neighbors were...alas! A bit odd that I totally missed this Santa Fe mention when I, um, LINK to that site. Ooops!

entering mountain time zone

It's been one year since we arrived in Santa Fe! I remember being so excited when we reached the state border. In fact, I almost wrecked because I was trying to take pictures of the "Welcome to New Mexico" sign and the sign above. Not too smooth. It's been a great year in the southwest and we're looking forward to the next one.

I am a very tired girl this morning. The cats never let me sleep, but sometimes it is worse than usual, and this is one of those weeks. The lack of sleep is really catching up to me and starting to affect my spirits. Just. Want. To. Sleep.

Yesterday also took a lot out of me between the news we got at the vet and the six trips to grocery stores that I mentioned over there in the sidebar. Rocky has an abnormally low glucose level which might not mean anything, but it could also mean that there is something going on inside of him. The vet mentioned tumors, cancer...not good stuff. But, considering that he is acting perfectly normal at home, we're hoping that all these tests are for naught and that he is fine. This morning we're taking him in for an ultrasound. They are going to check his heart and now his abdomen as well. He's already been to the vet twice this week so I feel badly about putting him through even more trauma. Hopefully it all goes well.

I'll check in later with an update on Rocky and I'll try to post my Friday Flickr faves as well!

The Automatic 220

A totally unexpected gift in the mail.
Sheryl sent this lovely gift to me a month or so ago and I have been having so much fun with it. (Thanks again!!) It's actually one of the plastic models, including a plastic lens, but I tell you what, it takes some nice pictures. I've been playing around with the film speed settings and light/dark switch a lot and this experimentation has led to some interesting results. One of my faves, taken in Albuquerque with full sun, actually came out dark because I overestimated the power of the film. But I love the picture.

Looks like twilight with shining stars. But no, it's poorly exposed with specs on it. Nonetheless, a happy accident!

Another fave, and not an accident is this one.

I've used pack film before, but lately I've learned a lot more about it and while my first love is always going to be the integral films, I'm really into using pack film now. Which is particularly good since after all the Polaroid film is gone or too expensive for me, there will still be Fuji pack film.

Off to water the garden now. Here's hoping we get some rain soon!!

Mom's Garden (among other things)

Hello. I keep meaning to be a better blogger and it just ain't happening unless I am babbling about Polaroid something or other. I even tried to get back on the Twitter bandwagon, the way of a lazy blogger. But no, that fizzled out quickly.

Things are going well. It's been almost one year since we left Pittsburgh and we're still loving it out here. It's hard not to love it. I mean, how could I possibly complain about almost daily sunshine?! It definitely good for my spirits and well-being.

And Spring has officially Sprung out here and I can't get enough of the flowering trees and tulips and flowers galore. We had dinner with my parents at their house last week and so I had to take some shots of my mom's garden, always so very lovely.

peach tree blossoms
Peach tree blossoms. Can't wait for more yummy peach jam that mom makes!!

peach-n-apricot tree
The peach/apricot tree, absolutely spectacular! Half of it gets light pink blossoms and half of it gets dark pink almost red blossoms. It is really only noticeable from a distance and so I admire it every morning as I run along the river (as I can see my parents' property from there).

mom's tulips
And tulips. I love tulips.

So yeah, you'll be seeing lots of mom's garden in the months ahead. I can't wait until the peonies bloom!

We took Rocky to the vet this morning for his blood work. If you recall, last November, we found out that he has a slight heart murmur so the vet recommended we have more tests done. Considering that he acts totally normally, healthy appetite (uh, we're talking about Rocky here!) and regular exercise, etc., the vet isn't too worried about it, but we need to be sure. On Friday we are taking him in for an ultrasound so we had to get his x-rays from our regular vet. Here's are two views of Rocky's insides:

Aww, my baby boy! Fingers crossed that we find out that he is totally fine!

So that's that for now. Let's see if I can try writing once or twice a week...

'Roid Week 2008!

It's 'Roid Week on Flickr, starting today, and I highly recommend that you dust off that Polaroid and start taking pictures! Even if you aren't a Flickr user, go buy one last pack of film (or two) and take some shots before it's all gone. There's nothing like a Polaroid.

Me, I have plenty of film for the time being, so in a way I am in denial about the whole thing. And then it hits me. Eventually, all the packs I have will be gone, I'll open the fridge and there will be NO MORE POLAROID FILM. Ahhhh, it breaks my heart.

Not to say that I am making great works of art, or even doing much more than taking photos of cats, flowers and Will like I always do, but you know, it makes me happy. So damn happy. And recently, it has pushed me to try new cameras and settings and films and it's all so good. So fun. It's really gotten the old creative juices flowing.

So I can't help repeating, if you have a Polaroid camera, go ahead and buy a couple of packs of film. Take pictures of your cat, your lover or at a rock show. Not only will it make you smile, it'll make the people with you smile too.

Okay, total dorkiness is over now.
